TMD: 10 X 1010 X 10: A History of deviantART
Proud to be a deviant? This history belongs to you. Is it long? You bet it's long-- ten years in the making long, told by ten of the deviants who built deviantART and kept it alive. So brew up a fresh pot, print up some pages, and sit down to the story of the decade
matteo (co-founder, deviantART): I was eighteen when deviantART first opened its doors. I was so young and naive. I had this idealistic vision of an online community of artists, coming together to promote creativity and the freedom of expression. We had no idea that it would actually succeed beyond our wildest dreams.
jark (co-founder, deviantART): At the time deviantART was conceived, I was living in Chiba, Japan. I had been working on websites for a few years and was actively brainstorming ideas for a new website. My main experience up through that point had been in the MP3 scene; I worked on a site called CyberTropix, briefly ran a skin
Why deviantART Will Never Be Perfect"This isn't worthy of a Daily Deviation!" "This user should be banned!" "OMG, moderators please remove this news article!!" "deviantART is going downhill... "
I can't even begin to count the times I have heard a complaint regarding deviantART. Gallery changes, changes to the overall layout, the introduction of llamas, a new moderator, a Daily Deviation, a new senior member... you name it, I've seen people complaining about it. No wait, not complaining but BITCHING.
Calling people names, making threats, rallying up friends/fans - it seems people would do anything to get their point across and have their say. And, sadly, in most cases these kinds of complaints turn into personal vendettas. All of a sudden EVERYTHING deviantART does is bad. EVERY SINGLE THING.
They don't cater to you specifically? They never asked what is your stance on llamas? They never even wanted to know what you thought of that oh-so-famous deviant green? NO?
Well in all honesty, let's be realistic here. W
Tips and Tricks for PhotographyI'm fairly new to photography, and I always love hearing new tips. So I thought the best way to help myself as well as others was to contact some people I admire. I've gotten some great responses, and here are the results!
1. JessicaBader says:
-When shooting outdoors, the sun should be behind you (unless you're shooting the sunrise/set).
-If you're taking a close-up of the face, put your focus on the eyes.
-Use a tripod for long shutter speeds so that your subject is always in focus.
2. Ursylla says:
-"Practice from the heart and not competitively... following trends in photography gets you nowhere because all trends come to an end eventually."
3. mediocre-matt says:
-"Experiment with different techniques. Don't be afraid of what other people say, just do what YOU want to. When it comes to photography, be selfish. It's all about YOU."

FINDING HAPPINESS ON DEVIANTART
If you want to get something out of it, put something into it. Visibility on deviantART is mostly a numbers game; there are so many users that unless you're interacting with others, even the highest-quality work may go nearly unseen. This advice sounds like a truism, but people seem to have difficulty understanding that no, their work is not some kind of miracle that breaks all the rules. Don't expect the community to fawn all over you for existing. You have to make them see you.
Don't expect the community to fawn over you, period. These people are usually your peers, but even if you don't think they are - they are not your buttmonkeys. Don't treat people that way.
The people who let you treat them terribly are not the ones you want. Some people will allow, and even encourage you to treat them like slaves. The
Art Thieves and Publishing Your WorkOriginally published under :iconmangaacademy:, hence the focus on comics.
Beybladegal asked me: “I was wondering how safe this site is for original art work. I’ve been wanting to put some of my own character on here but I’m afraid to out of fear of having someone steal it. I was just wondering if you’ve had any problems with this kind of thing? Or if you do something special to keep them safe.”
I figured this is a question lots of people ask themselves (and I have too), so I’ll share my long-winded answer.
1. Thieves are going to steal. We had our car broken into once and the thief took nothing. He couldn’t pry open the door so he just shattered the window to unlock it. We had nothing valuable, but we had to replace our broken window. I hope that a thief may wander into your gallery, see nothing worth taking
Popularity: A refreshing viewI've read stuff in other people's journals (and in the forums, continuously) about dA being a popularity contest, how unfair it is that some people are popular and other, more deserving people aren't etc. And I'd just like to say...umm, no! There is no such thing as 'deserving' or 'undeserving' when it comes to art, because art gains popularity simply from people looking at it and liking it, and there is no one type of art that 'deserves' to be liked more than any other type. Art is about the message it sends out, inspiring the viewer, getting a reaction, making people think. And it doesn't have to be some amazing complex detailed painting that took six weeks to do to have this effect on people who look at it.
I don't want to get into a whole 'what is art' thing here, cause that's not what this is about. It's about dA and the perceived popularity contest. People whine about 'unknown' artists not getting enough

Group Abuse: Killing our CommunitiesGroups! What a great feature on deviantART. They kicked off last year and have been a huge success. Nothing but good has come from the groups system or has it? I can tell you that right now under the layer of hype lies a deep, dark problem that's slowly killing our communities, unknown artists, and our ART. I'm going to tell you my own story, then explain.
I'm the founder of a large photography group here on deviantART. We've been using the groups system since the very first day they officially released. At the time of this writing, we have almost 3600 members. We've grown rapidly to become one of the largest and most successful photography groups around. As a founder, it's always interesting to see how your group is doing. It's a lot of fun to look at statistics, new members, submissions, and comments. Until now.
We had an excellent discussion in our group chat debating the following issues. Together, we came up with these issues and decided to raise them to the communit
