What Does the Word "Concept" Mean to You? - mini interviews with deviants
The same as `FaMz (some time ago) I asked deviants about their interpretation of conceptual photography. Here are some of them.
What does the word "Concept" mean to you? What are your usual subjects/study in your concepts (photographs) and how do you develop them?
I think that "concept" can refer to an idea in its broadest meaning, not necessarily to a clear message. It is more like a symbol in a picture.
My usual subjects are everything that exists inside the human mind (feelings, thoughts, desires, fears,...). I like to make the invisible become visible in my pictures through concepts. I thus resort to symbolism, in order to represent the concepts I want to depict: I choose props, lights, settings, that can represent the concept I have in mind. Everything becomes a symbol

PE: Tips & Tricks for Conceptual Photography
Project Educate: Tips & Tricks for Conceptual Photography
Conceptual photography may seem like an intimidating field to get into, but it's not as difficult as it might seem. Here are some tips to get you started on thinking like a conceptual photographer.
Conceptual photography fascinates not too many more photographers than it frustrates. The skill required in composition, not merely with regards to technical or aesthetic consideration but also for mind-breaking, clever metaphors and ideas, is a difficult one to acquire. This article aims to help someone develop an eye for composition in conceptual photography.
Before We Begin
It's hard to tell an artist how to approach their art. After all, every artist has a different approach. This is especially true of conceptual photography. However, once you get started into conceptual photographs, your own style and methods will soon emerge. It's t

Project Educate: The ideas factory
The ideas factory - Conceptual Photography
Conceptual photography is one of those ways, that you can get your concept across the mind of the viewer using just the contents of a photograph. Conceptual Photography doesn’t need much effort, but just an idea, and you can use any object in front of you to photograph and convey the message. Conceptual Photography is really one of those areas where the creative side of photographer comes in.
The idea factor obviously doesn’t need you to take days and hours thinking about a photograph in order for it to be a great image. This genre is simply where you have to put different types of various things in the field and grab an idea to use that stuff. Indeed Photoshop or other software does come in handy, to give some dramatic effect, but the harder part is capturing and you need to think alot to get something out of it.
Project Educate: Being a People PersonSo you've got the equipment, you've got the top notch camera, the lighting, the studio, the backdrop and even the perfect weather - everything you need for a portrait photography shoot right? Wrong. The key behind all photographs that contain a living and breathing subject is to have the natural look. Just like the key to a conceptual shot is having the idea, the key to portraiture photography is having the eye. Co-operative subjects help too!
I have especially found in the past, that people develop a pained and strained look on their face when the camera is pointed in their direction. Interestingly enough, it happens more often at Weddings. The bride and groom quite often develop the look that they might have when they've just finished writing out the cheque for me to photograph their big day...
Then, quite suddenly one day, I got it. It was when a stunning bridesmaid at a wedding lifted her hands in front of her face and squealed when I clicked the camera in her
PE Interview with DD Suggester Minato-KushinaAs part of Daily Deviations PE week we have interviewed the lovely `Minato-Kushina who has been suggesting DDs since November 2010. She has since then had over 500 suggestions accepted and as a result of her regular suggestions, made her name known on the DD page.
What first got you interested in wanting to suggest DDs?
I don't really remember the exact point when I started paying attention to DDs. I guess, I saw these beautiful pictures at the bottom of my page. Gradually, I understood that they were a kind of "award" for outstanding pieces. I was also wondering how some people could suggest DDs! By searching here and there, I found the way.
I eventually decided to send my first suggestion to ^rydi1689, the then Fan Art Gallery Moderator. She is so kind, she accepted it immediately! This encouraged me to suggest more and eventually to love this task. I am generally shy with others. So this gesture, although it may seemed normal to her, it was
Welcome to Daily Deviations PE WeekWelcome to Daily Deviations week!
Over the course of this week we'll celebrate the positive side of DDs and discuss the negatives, allay some fears, and address some myths in the hopes that all members of dA will have a better understanding of how and why DDs are featured. We hope that everyone will enjoy what we have prepared for you all as we tried to incorporate the feedback you have so generously given us as we prepared for this week. We hope that we will address your concerns, but feel free to ask questions at any time!

Community Voices: What is a Daily Deviation?DDs: The deviantART definition
So, as the title says, What in the world IS a Daily Deviation (DD), anyway?
You know what deviantART says about it, right? Under :faq61: it says:
A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.
That says nothing about a DD being a perfect specimen of art-- in fact, it doesn't even use the word "art" at all. Basically, as CVs, when we are giving a DD, we are doing so because we think the image is interesting and well-done and deserves your attention. It may be technically exquisite. It may be technically quite good but exceptionally thought-provoking. It may be exceedingly creative. It may be all of these things! Above all else, it should stand out in some way from others in that medium or gallery.
The CR Stamp Project: WinnersAfter receiving some great amazing entries, the Community Relations team voted and so, without any further delay, the winners are:
Most voted stamp among the static entries.
Most voted stamp among the animated entries.
Prize given using a random generator.
Best Stamp overall
Most voted stamp in general.
Congratulations! Each winner will receive a 3 months Premium Membership from the Community Relations team.
Thanks to everybody who participated! Remember that you're always encouraged to show your support for the CR Team in the form of a stamp! This project is intended to be recurrent, so keep an eye on this space for more information in the future!

Project Educate: Architecture and Urban & Rural Photography Week
An introduction to the Architecture Photography gallery
Hi there and welcome to the Project Educate week for Architecture and Urban & Rural Photography! Before the week can really start off, we need to find out what Architecture and Urban & Rural Photography are really about. In later articles, we will also go in depth on the subcategories of both galleries. We'll start off with Architecture Photography!
Architecture photography, found as photography subcategory Photography > Architecture, is photography focusing on buildings and structures. Both interior and exterior photographs of buildings and structures can be classified as Architecture photography. It is described by deviantART as; "Interior and exterior photographs of buildings and other architectural structures."
It's divided into four categories, which we will explore in a la
PE DDs: When It's Not Always PositiveWhen DDs Go Awry
Daily Deviations, or “DDs,” are frequently held in very high esteem on deviantART. After all, what artist does not want his or her work displayed for more than 20 million viewers to see and admire? The benefits of receiving a DD feature include increased exposure for your work and a day in the spotlight for you as an artist. Many people therefore view DDs as badges of honor, awards that make them proud and validate the time they spend in our community.
Be careful what you wish for!
Don’t get us wrong-- DDs are wonderful for the purposes listed above. But, they can also bring a lot of drama upon the artist, especially if they are controversial.
Let’s talk about some of the sources of this drama.
Some people feel that people who post art-- and especially those whose art is worthy of a Daily Deviation-- should have thick enough skin to accept criticism as well as praise. They argue that criticism is part
PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your workHello all!
Well we’ve had a fascinating week so far; a week which hopefully has provided some insight not only to the process of DD selection but helped you understand what we look for in DDs as CVs. As we draw to the end of this week, I bring you an article which will whet your Saturday with thoughts that don’t just apply to the DD feature, but something which should be a consideration to everything you submit to dA. I am talking about deviation presentation.
Why is Presentation important?
Art isn’t always about just being “creative”. There are techniques and skills which develop over time which contribute to the quality of the work you produce and alongside this comes a developed understanding of good presentation.
Good presentation could be anything from cropping a photograph, to spell checking your literature. These are common sense things that in the rush of wanting to show off your creativity can sometimes be
PE Community Week: Educate Your Community%projecteducate's third Community Week
is right around the corner. We'll be kicking off September 24th and we need you on board!
What is Community Week?
The majority of Project Educate is run by the CVs. But there's only a few of them and a lot of us—which is why we're asking you, now, to contribute. Know about a specialized art form or technique? Got some advice on becoming well-known for positivity? Want to share your sweet critique skills? We want it all, and we want it now.
In the past, people have contributed in all kinds of ways. The following are just some suggestions to get your thoughts going!

There are tons of options for a blog. Art features with an explanation of the technique or style showcased; tutorials on creating a certain effect (with examples); critiques and how to critique; interacting; dA for dummies—if you have an idea that will make being on this website a more po
